About the role

Briffa is a boutique intellectual property law firm based in central London and is seeking an experienced and proactive Operations & Technology Engineer to join its team. This represents a totally new role within the firm which is being created in response to the rapidly changing legal market. As a result, it could easily fall within a different title, such as COO of Tech/AI, Automation Engineer or Technical Product Manager.

Irrespective of the title, this role will report directly to the firm’s management team and be tasked with driving forward multiple technology related reforms, with a particular focus on automation and AI.

BACKGROUND

Briffa is a forward-thinking law firm which was founded over 30 years ago. It has been an early adopter of multiple legal tech solutions in recent years and it consistently punches above its weight when it comes to service delivery. However, change in the legal industry is happening at pace and Briffa is keen to add a team member with real insight and expertise in the field of tech implementation. There is huge potential for growth in this sector however it’s unlikely to be driven by lawyers alone. Our aim is to hire someone who can help us grow through a combination of efficiency gains and operational innovation, helping us work smarter, not harder.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Ongoing assessment of Briffa’s processes and practices (covering legal work, accounts and administration) with a view to identifying areas ripe for operational improvements involving automation, AI, tech, etc wherever beneficial.
  • In respect of any operational improvements which have been identified, following the below implementation plan:
  • Research/plan proposed improvements, including SWOT analysis + cost.
  • Propose/present the project to management, setting out implementation stages, how issues/problems will be overcome e.g. transition from system A to system B, training etc.
  • Implement incl, liaising internally with different teams, externally with any providers e.g. new tech providers, trainers etc.
  • Measure/report, monitor project post implementation, assess/report on ROI in terms of cost + efficiency, assess ongoing basis with a view to further tweaks/improvements as technology improves or business need changes etc.
  • Assessment of new legal tech solutions in the market, including attending relevant industry events and seminars.
  • Oversight of all software solutions operated by the firm.
  • Being an advocate for tech adoption and automation, helping all members of the firm, irrespective of their role or department, to get the most out of the software available to them.

EXPERIENCE, skills and Qualifications

Essential experience

  • Strong practical knowledge of, and competence using, generative AI, AI agents and LLM integration within software applications.
  • Excellent knowledge of, and competence using, MS Office.
  • Evidence of being able to deliver tech solutions at pace, bringing a positive approach and finding creative solutions to remove blocks in workflows.
  • Evidence of developing tech initiatives in a user-friendly way, homing in on the right problems to solve and understanding the human experience.
  • Evidence of being able to distil complex ideas into simple and impactful solutions.

Essential skills

  • Strong ability to grasp new and developing tech solutions.
  • Natural interest in business tools, service delivery and tech enablement.
  • Supportive and reliable team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Highly desirable skills and experience

  • Hands-on execution with no-code/low-code tools.
  • Knowledge of law firms and experience in the professional services industry.
  • Knowledge of, and competence using, legal tech solutions such as Clio, NetDocuments, Lexis+ AI, Harvey and Legora.
